In a state more commonly known for its bayous and marsh areas, Louisiana’s Lake Claiborne State Park offers a surprising change of scenery with its gentle hills and forested landscape. The park is located in north-central Louisiana, just 30 miles from the Arkansas state line.

Instead of opting for the campground, I chose to stay in one of the park’s newly renovated cabins. Perched on a hill overlooking the lake, the cabins offer stunning views that make the most of their scenic location. The spacious design includes an outdoor deck and a loft bedroom, both of which provide panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Watching the sunset from the cabin deck was a highlight of my stay, as the color of the setting sun reflected on the lake below.

Lake Claiborne’s Beach is a popular spot during the hot summer months. Jesse Gunnels, a college student nearing her final semester, found a sunny spot to read and cool off. “I think I’ve been four or five times this summer just to swim and things,” Gunnels said. “I like to come out and walk the trails.” The park’s combination of water activities and hiking trails offers something for everyone, making it an ideal destination for those looking to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
The beach and swimming area were recently reshaped when the manmade lake was drained for routine maintenance. “The water is wonderful,” says Jacki Maynor, a visitor from Milwaukee, “very warm, very nice.” Shaded picnic cabanas have been added to the beach, providing a comfortable place to relax after a swim.

a quiet place to enjoy nature
I enjoyed my first cup of coffee sitting outside on the cabin deck. The trees were full of the sounds of singing birds. With the help of a birdwatching app, I recorded nearly a dozen different bird calls in just 10 minutes. “You listen to the birds and the quietness, the stillness—we’re off the beaten path,” explained assistant park manager Shonna Jordan. Earlier that morning, Jordan said she spotted deer near the park office, adding to the sense of peaceful seclusion. “It’s a getaway from the hustle and bustle,” she said.
